Attitudinal vs Behavioral Research Methods

These are two different classes of UX Research Methods. We need to consider the specific information we aim to gather from users in order to determine the appropriate method for data collection.

Attitudinal Methods: are about what people say.

Behavioral Methods: are about what people actually do.

Attitudinal Methods: we need to listen/read what they say.

Behavioral Methods: we need to observe and analyze what they do.

Attitudinal Methods: answer WHY questions.

Behavioral Methods: answer WHAT and HOW questions.

Attitudinal Methods: are valuable for understanding users' motivations, expectations, thoughts, beliefs, self-reported needs and the emotional aspects of their experiences.

Behavioral Methods: are valuable for understanding how users actually engage with a product.

Attitudinal Methods: what do users think? What do they feel? What prefer?

Behavioral Methods: what are the pain points? What are the usability issues? Does it work with my users?

Examples of Attitudinal Methods:

Surveys and Questionnaires

Interviews

Focus Groups

Diary studies

Examples of Behavioral Methods:

Usability tests

Analytics

A/B Testing

Eye Tracking
